Your name: Jared Deal
Where you’re from (keep it general. No addresses!): I was born in Delaware, but have lived in New York for the past 10 years. Currently living in Brooklyn.
When did you first get into plush? A couple of years back my girlfriend Michelle made me a custom plush as a gift because she knew how much I loved toys. After seeing her awesome plush I was inspired to give it a go myself. I had been doing the vinyl thing with our Carney toys for a few years so this was an exciting new outlet to channel my toy goodness.
What inspires you to continue to make plush? The more I work with plush the more I try to push it. I started out very simple, but recently I’ve been trying to make my toys a little more 3D. I’m starting to “build out” my toys a little more & figure out new patterns & how to achieve specific shapes. I see myself progressing & learning, so that’s always a driving force. I am also inspired by all of the other amazing plush artists out there. It’s exciting to see this whole scene catching on. Granted plush has been around for quite some time, but it’s great to see it getting accepted as the intricate art form that it is. To see artists express themselves in plush form is a cool thing!
Any favourite plush gods/artists/designers out there that influence you? So many great plush designers. Anna Chambers & Cat Rabbit are two of my favourites!
If you were stuck on a desert island with only a couple of yards of fabric, scissors and thread, what would you make? A boat… just like Macgyver , haha.
Which one of your own plush would you describe as a self-portrait?
Haha, just kidding.
